Employees of the prosecutor's office of Moldova seize documents in the office of the opposition Party of Socialists of the Republic of Moldova (PSRM), NewsMaker reports with reference to the press secretary of the country's Prosecutor General's Office, Mariana Kerpec.

“Anti-corruption prosecutor's office employees are now confiscating documents at the headquarters PSRM. This operation is part of an investigation into the illegal financing of a political party, — said Kerpek.

According to the spokeswoman, this is not a full-fledged search in the office of the PSRM, the prosecutors intend to seize only the documents that are necessary to investigate the case of illegal financing of the party.

Former Moldovan President Igor Dodon led the PSRM until the end of December. Now he is under investigation due to four counts of treason, illegal enrichment, passive corruption and illegal party financing.

The basis for the investigation against Dodon was the video from the meeting of the ex-president with the former head of the Democratic Party of Moldova, entrepreneur Vladimir Plahotniuc, which was published back in 2020 by ex-deputy Iurie Renita. In a video recorded in 2019, Plahotniuc and his deputy Sergei Yaralov are handing over to Dodon a package, according to Renita, with money. At the same time, Dodon and Plahotniuc are also discussing the formation of a coalition in parliament.

The criminal case against the former president was opened on May 18. On May 23, Dodon was detained for 72 hours, and then put under house arrest for 30 days. The prosecutor's office said it would appeal against the house arrest decision.

Dodon considers the case against him political and fabricated by order of the current president of Moldova, Maia Sandu. The ex-president named three goals of the investigation: “to divert the attention of the population from social problems”, to exert psychological pressure on them, as well as an attempt to liquidate the PSRM, which appears in the case.

Sandu, commenting on the investigation, expressed hope that that the prosecutor's office “does not engage in political games either on someone else's or on their own initiative.” She also focused on the leaks of information about the case, which are “alarming”, and turned to the department for clarification.

In the Kremlin, commenting on the Dodon case, they expressed their concern and pointed to the use of the practice of persecution “against those who are supporters of the development of friendly mutually beneficial relations” with Russia.
