There was already chatter of an “electrifying” development over the past few days with market participants suggesting that the rise in Tata Motors shares was also the result of talk of a deal with Tesla.

In one of the most ambitious plans made around electric mobility and affordability, homegrown auto giant Tata Motors has said that it plans to price its green cars at “not more than 15-20% premium” to conventional petrol/diesel vehicles, while offering a battery range at least in excess of 200km on a single charge.

Tata Motors on Tuesday reported a consolidated net loss of Rs 307.26 crore for the second quarter ended September 30. The auto major had reported a net loss of Rs 187.7 crore during the July-September period previous fiscal.

Tata Motors on Saturday said it has collaborated with HDFC Bank for financing of its passenger vehicles. Some of its companies like Indian Hotels (Taj), Tata SIA Airlines (Vistara) and Tata Motors have been majorly hit after travel bans and production shutdowns of non-essential products. Some other units like Tata Power and Tata Communications benefited as stay-at-home restrictions increased demand for electricity and internet.

The move is a precursor to bring in a strategic partner in the loss-making passenger vehicles unit to secure its future. Tata Motors’s passenger vehicles business has been hit by weak sales and production disruptions amid an economic slowdown and the coronavirus pandemic.
